Woke up to fog at Pulpit Harbor, Northhaven Maine.
Yesterday I helped with the bringing down of the sails. Unlike last year where I helped with the Peak or Throat team with putting up or bringing down the Fore or Main sail, this year my help was spotty due to falling and wrenching my knee and spraining my ankle. If I had been by myself I would have just ignored it and helped BUT Bob kept an eagle eye on me and made sure I kept off my feet as much as possible. So instead of helping with bringing up the sails with the teams I would help in Upper Level Management. It was holding a line taut and not much stress on either my knee or ankle.
Helped Sarah who was the assistant mess mate or cook with snack on Tuesday. I went down to make a cup of afternoon tea and saw her looking like she was beyond frustration. She was down in the Galley getting really frustrated with some thawed out puff pastry. I told her no one was going to know how we got it to the point of perfection. It was not coming apart since it was too thawed. So instead of separating the layers which at that point was impossible, we just stretched it out. It looked lovely and tasted just fine. She had one sweet and one savory.
Monday night after supper we went up on deck to have our desert of strawberry shortcake and tea or coffee. We were all sitting around and looking around us we counted 5 other schooners. It was a quiet night. The cook had just turned 21 so she and a few of the other crew members jumped in maybe the pea-pod (I will have to look at the photos) and went to celebrate with other crew members of other boats. Well us aboard the Mary Day looked over at one of the other schooners and one had their Maritime flags up that spell out certain messages. Each flag represents a letter so one of the men went below, got the book to help us to figure out but some of us were already hard at work trying to crack the code. Some had binoculars, some had cameras, I zoomed in and took pictures. Then we were comparing the flags to the letters. The only thing was NOT all the letters for the words we were thinking of were present... nuts!!! Well we all figured it must be saying ice cream, but what about the flags that meant nothing... One fellow went and asked Captain Barry and he said they probably didn't have the flag for say "E" so they put in a sub... Well sure enough we figured they must have homemade ice cream aboard so we proposed a raiding and boarding party. Captain Bary said "take the tee shirts below that say Schooner Angelique... so you are in disguise..." LOL!!! One of the passengers was practicing her rowing skills and she rowed over and came back with the info were were looking for... yes, they had ice cream aboard... Don't feel too bad for us. We were too stuffed to go raid another boat and we didn't go hungry. We ate quiet well all week, too good in fact and you don't burn up too many calories sitting around on deck. We did get our homemade ice cream on Friday night :-) I took pictures of it... there is a funny story attached to that but that is for later :-)
We saw an Osprey and her babies, a picture I have already attached... I think. If not I will.
